Spring is well and truly here and so step into the enchanting Ramster Garden, Surrey's hidden gem, renowned for its rare trees and a kaleidoscope of blossoming shrubs. Expect a collection of inspirational original pieces of sculpture will be set within a magical woodland setting and staged within the garden, adding further drama to the breath-taking show of over 300 rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias which burst into colour at Ramster throughout spring. If you love visiting a garden packed full of variety then Vann Garden sounds like it has it all. Composed of several distinct areas they are said to have their own stories and unique planting. Areas range from Jekyll Water Garden, Centenary Garden, South end Main lawn, Yew Walk and much more. Its February which can only mean one thing its time for the plants to stage a takeover at RHS Wisley. Visit RHS Wisley gardens from 3rd February until 10th March to discover familiar houseplants in extraordinary settings and creatively planted in the famous glasshouse.

A warped winter’s tale of cancel culture

This play is very relevant to our times and very apt for this time of year too.

Christmas Is Cancelled is an exciting new play from writer/actress Tuula Costelloe, which, unusually for a fringe show, offers a multi-sensory experience, involving burlesque, a scented auditorium, temperature changes, audience interaction and even festive nibbles.

It starts its runs 11th and plays -14th, 17th -19th, 22nd -24th December 2023, at 7pm (6pm Sundays)

Kate Ghotti is one of the most successful TV personalities in the UK, apparently living a perfect life of wealth, success and popularity. So when she learns that an exposé article is about to be published which could destroy her career, friendships, freedom and life, she’ll stop at nothing to prevent it.

A thought-provoking reflection on today’s cancel culture, the audience’s loyalties will be challenged at every step of Kate’s journey from decadence to desperation as she resorts to ever riskier remedies of damage limitation, which in turn expose her to dangers of a different kind. Just to add to that intrigue, performances on Tuesday and Saturday performances will have different endings to those on other days!

Tuula Costelloe was included in the top 1% of the BBC Writers Room Open Call and Shortlist, and was one of the leading writers in the Edinburgh TV Festival/All 3 Media New Drama Collective. She studied theatre at Trinity College Dublin before graduating from the New York Film Academy and has since appeared both on stage and film, as well as penning three novels. Christmas Is Cancelled , in which she appears as Kate, marks her playwriting debut.

The play is directed by Hector Smith , who graduated with an MA in Text & Performance from RADA and who has previously directed at the Phoenix Theatre Melbourne (Australia), House of International Theatre Copenhagen and the Cockpit Theatre London. The cast is completed by Graeme Culliton (Arthur), Lara De Belder (Aisha), Rosa French (Jane), Megan Sangster (Hana) and Anas Zabadne (Niall).

If you’re looking for a darkly bracing and contentious antidote to December’s overload of seasonal sentimentality, Christmas Is Cancelled is the play for you!

The fun-filled festive show will run from 8th to 10th December and will feature performances from some rising skating stars!

Regular listeners will know Suzanne Hunter regularly reviews for both Savil Garden and Surrey Sculpture Society events so are delighted to say the Surrey Sculpture Societies work will be in situ for an installation at Savil Garden from 6th September.

This year the show will start earlier than normal to maximise the glorious autumn colours on display in this widely varied garden location.

Savill Garden is a wonderful arrangement of gardens and woods which lends itself to being the perfect backdrop for our work. Sculptures will be placed intricately amongst the various interconnected gardens, allowing the viewers to imagine how the sculpture would look in their own gardens, whilst also having large open spaces for bigger pieces.

Come and experience inspiring sculptures in a glorious landscape from 6 September until 31 October.

So on the subject of Sculptures It is a delight to hear of the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden. We love their philosophy and vision of “Art and Nature in Perfect Harmony”.
Heralded as one of the first of its kind in the UK, The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden has been exhibiting and selling contemporary sculpture for nearly 40 years Every year they exhibit around 200 pieces by some 50+ artists. The garden is opening its door for the season from Easter Weekend until with the Indoor Exhibition opening from 6th April until the end of October.

Ramster Garden is hosting an extensive and accessible sculpture trail from 28th April to 29th May 2023. Curated and installed by the Surrey Sculpture Society, Visitors will be able to see over 100 original pieces of affordable art created by both professional and emerging sculptors. The sculpture trail coincides with the spectacular flowering of Ramster Gardens’ signature collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias making this an annual highlight in Surrey’s horticultural calendar.

Held in the Garden Room at RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science it is the chance to meet orchid growers, browse dazzling displays and pick up expert advice with their program of talks and demos. View a stunning collection of animal sculptures at RHS Garden Hyde Hall by Susan Bacon and Marcus Cornish based on one of the world's best-known collections of morality tales, Aesop’s Fables. For 25 centuries, The Fables of Aesop have amused and instructed generations of adults and children.
They are still as fresh and poignant today as they were to the Ancient Greeks.

The exhibition is located in the Dry Garden, where the Mediterranean planting, with its sharp and definite shapes gives a theatrical backdrop to the sculptures. The life-size animal sculptures include a raven, fox, cat, swallow, duck, owl, whippets, hares, a mare and foal. The outside exhibition runs from 17th March til 31st December RHS Garden Hyde Hall, CM3 8ET

These two countries are often portrayed as international pariahs, and two of the last places you’d want to visit, but for Michael, the best part of travelling is looking behind the headlines and getting to know what life is really like for the people who live there. Experience the magic of the Christmas story live at The Wintershall Nativity Play, from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 December. The critically acclaimed production is presented both outdoors in the rolling landscape of the Wintershall Estate in Surrey, as well as inside the intimate surroundings of Holly Barn. 50 volunteer actors in biblical costumes, alongside a cast of sheep, donkeys, horses and a sheepdog, take the audience on foot from the open air into the atmospheric, candle-lit barn, as the story of how Jesus changed the world unfolds with songs and music and joyful carolling.

The Nativity has become a much-anticipated fixture of the Christmas season, performed by Wintershall, producers of the famous Passion of Jesus which plays to an audience of over 20,000 people each Easter in Trafalgar Square. Enjoy this timeless festive experience with friends and family as the real story of Christmas is brought to life. Time to start waving your Union Jacks- yes it’s that time again for the ever popular Proms in the Park 2019.Join in the Last Night of the Proms celebrations in Hyde Park, hosted once again by the bubbly and brilliant Michael Ball and featuring a whole host of star names from the world of pop, rock and classical world and headlining this year. Following on from their Epic success at Easter bringing the Passion of Christ to Guildford for the first time; The Wintersall Players production of the Life of Christ is not to be missed!

From Tuesday 18 to Saturday 22 June, from 10am to 3.30pm, this open-air epic promenade performance, in three acts, will take the audience back in time to the Palestine of Jesus’ day. James Burke-Dunsmore who gave an incredibly brilliant portrayal as Jesus in the Passion of Jesus once again leads a cast of more than a hundred dedicated volunteers, dressed in full costume, in this moving and authentic re-enactment of the remarkable events of Jesus’ life.

The players have become renowned for their epic re-enactments of what is, indeed, the greatest story of all time. Every year on Good Friday The Passion of Jesus is performed to over 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square and every summer The Life of Christ is presented at the Hutley family’s beautiful farm. Wintershall,an area of extraordinary natural beauty which sits within the rolling landscape of the Surrey Hills, less than an hour from London.

Wintershall, in the heart of the Surrey countryside, is a privately-owned farm and park. Peter and Ann Hutley have lived here for over 50 years and under their stewardship, the estate has expanded into a haven for wildlife, mature woodland and farmland. It is also the home of The Wintershall Nativity plays.

The Life of Christ was originally written and adapted from the bible by Peter to mark the Millennium. Staged as a one-off production in 1999, it was so popular it has been performed almost every year in the 19 years since.

The Dublin Legends, Sean Cannon, Paul Watchorn, Gerry O'Connor & Shay Kavanagh have over 100 years of performing with The Dubliners between them and will continue to play all the classic songs and ballads known the world over; Whiskey in The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Wild Rover, Seven Drunken Nights, The Rare Auld Times, Molly Malone, The Irish Rover, Black Velvet Band & many more. Late last year the band suffered a huge loss when guitarist and founder, Eamonn Campbell, passed away while they were on tour in Holland. Even though he had been in poor health it was still a massive shock. The lads asked an old friend, Shay Kavanagh, if he would like to come on the road with them and, thankfully, Shay readily agreed. Shay is a stalwart of the Irish Folk Music scene. He was a founding member of General Humbert with the great Mary Black and has played with The Dublin City Ramblers for many years.

The band decided it was time to go back to the studio and record a brand new CD which is now ready for release. The Dublin Sessions will feature 16 newly recorded tracks and includes some old favourites & classics that the lads wanted to get down on disc. Spectacular 'Butterflies in The Glasshouse' exhibit returns to RHS Garden Wisley.

The vibrant Butterflies in The Glasshouse exhibit returns to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley from 13 January-4 March 2018, providing a tropical retreat for visitors this winter. You can expect to see more than 50 species of exotic free-flying butterflies will inhabit the Tropical Zone of the cathedral-like Glasshouse for this eye-catching exhibit. The special guests will showcase their magnificent colours, patterns and form amongst lush-tropical plantings, such as palm trees, bananas, bromeliads and climbers, as well as aquatic plants that thrive in the warm jungle pool.

New species of butterflies such as Graphium doson and Papilio paris, will be joining vibrant favourites for 2018, such as Morpho peleides, Kallima inachus and Siproeta stelene. The Graphium doson is a black tropical butterfly with pale blue semi-transparent central wing bands that are formed by large spots and is widespread throughout Southeast Asia. Papilio paris, the Paris peacock, a striking species of swallowtail butterfly found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. 500 Of Wisley Gardens trees are under threat due to road expansion plans.

One of the UK's most loved and horticulturally important gardens is under threat from Highways England plans to widen the A3 in what could be the ultimate garden grab. RHS Garden Wisley, a Grade II* listed garden, could have more than 10,000 sq. metres of woodland grabbed and more than 500 trees destroyed, including one planted by The Queen to mark her Silver Jubilee, if one of Highways England's plans is developed.

The RHS estimates that the 500 threatened trees help to negate the emissions of 19,000 cars each year.

Mel Brooks' quirky musical Young Frankenstein receives its West End premiere at London's Garrick Theatre, opening for a limited season beginning September 2017. Based on the 1974 Oscar-nominated film co-written with Thomas Meehan and starring Gene Wilder, the brand new production follows a Broadway run that closed in 2009.

Young Frankenstein is the wickedly inspired re-imagining of Mary Shelley's classic novel, which sees the creation of a creature that cannot be controlled. When Frederick Frankenstein, a New York brain surgeon and professor, inherits a Transylvanian castle and laboratory from his genius, but deranged grandfather, Victor Von Frankenstein, he quickly has some decisions to make.

Facing a scary dilemma, young Frankenstein must choose whether to run from his grandfather's frightening legacy or to continue to crazily experiment with reanimating the dead. And, in the process, will he fall in love with his sultry lab assistant, Inga?

What does it take to be better than the best? To stand up for what you believe?
It's April 1967. In a shabby Bethnal Green boxing gym, elderly trainer Jimmy hears the news: heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Muhammad Ali, has defied the US Military by refusing to fight in Vietnam.

It's a story Jimmy knows all too well. As a Quaker Boxer he himself made a choice during WW1, when Conscription sent pacifists to prison or the firing squad: when he, at the peak of his boxing career and physical prowess, refused to fight for King and Country despite the terrifying consequences.
Jimmy still can't face his demons from the past and now there's a new one from the present: Jo, a Polish immigrant who lives on the local estate. Just turned 16, Jo's strong, talented, impulsive, angry and, given the chance, potentially a brilliant boxer – but she's a girl. Jimmy is 70 now; has he the strength, or even the patience, to coach this wild young teenager and teach her discipline and respect?

Two blokes juggle over 20 instruments in a spellbinding performance of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells For Two performed live in a show that is a multi-award winning sell-out hit at festivals and theatres around the world.

Mike Oldfield's groundbreaking Tubular Bells is an instantly recognisable icon of the Seventies. The first release on Richard Branson's record label, Virgin Records, in 1973, it went on to sell over 30 million copies, kickstarting the Virgin empire. More than 40 years later, two young Australian multi-instrumentalists, Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts, tried to perform the epic on guitars one night over a bottle of wine. Intrigued by the idea of recreating Oldfield's multi-tracked masterpiece in real time, they started adding more and more instruments – and created a live event that is as challenging for the performers as it is entertaining for the audience.

Tubular Bells For Two took audiences by storm when it made its UK debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012. Now returning for a short British tour – its first since 2015 – Holdsworth and accomplished colleague Tom Bamford (Roberts is currently on sabbatical) are ready to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, as they tackle the Tubular Bells marathon.

Opening act will be GypsyFingers, featuring Luke and Victoria Oldfield – and yes, Luke was introduced to the show by father Mike, who has given it his seal of approval!

Mike Oldfield's groundbreaking Tubular Bells is an instantly recognisable icon of the Seventies. The first release on Richard Branson's record label, Virgin Records, in 1973, it went on to sell over 30 million copies, kickstarting the Virgin empire. More than 40 years later, two young Australian multi-instrumentalists, Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts, tried to perform the epic on guitars one night over a bottle of wine. Intrigued by the idea of recreating Oldfield's multi-tracked masterpiece in real time, they started adding more and more instruments – and created a live event that is as challenging for the performers as it is entertaining for the audience.

Tubular Bells For Two took audiences by storm when it made its UK debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012. Now returning for a short British tour – its first since 2015 – Holdsworth and accomplished colleague Tom Bamford (Roberts is currently on sabbatical) are ready to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, as they tackle the Tubular Bells marathon.

Opening act will be GypsyFingers, featuring Luke and Victoria Oldfield – and yes, Luke was introduced to the show by father Mike, who has given it his seal of approval!

Rose Theatre Kingston Summer School. The Rose Youth Theatre are performing both Pride and Prejudice and Great Expectations in August and you could get the bug for acting if you try the summer school.

Rose Theatre Kingston's Summer Schools are back, running from Saturday 22 July – Saturday 2 September, for ages seven – twenty–five, ranging from three days to a week.

The Rose Academy is for 16 – 25 year olds on either Monday 24 – Saturday 29 July or Monday 28 August – Saturday 2 September and are by audition only. This course is for those who are serious about a career in acting and who are considering professional training. This course helps applicants maximise their chances of a place at drama school, whilst offering a unique insight into the professional life of an actor. Applicants will work with the best practitioners and get coaching on audition monologues.

Tenors Unlimited the 'Rat Pack of Opera' launch fundraising single 'Carry You' at Summer Soiree concert on Saturday 1st July 7pm at St Martin's Church, East Horsley, Surrey, in aid of Cobham-based children's charity Harrison's Fund which fights Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Internationally acclaimed operatic trio Tenors Unlimited, the 'Rat Pack of Opera' are Paul Martin, Jem Sharples and Scott Ciscon. They will be launching a special song 'Carry You', composed by the group's Paul Martin, in aid of children's charity Cobham-based Harrison's Fund at a fundraising concert on Saturday 1st July 7pm at St Martin's Church, East Horsley, Surrey. Paul is from Cobham, Surrey and Jem is from Surbiton, Surrey.

The charity is named after the ten year old from Surrey who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic condition which affects all the muscles in the body, causing them to waste away. Harrison's Fund's goal is to get as much money as possible into the hands of the world's best researchers, who are working to find a cure for Duchenne.
The charity is currently funding 12 research projects in the US and the UK.
All profits from the refreshments sold at the concert will go to the charity Harrison's Fund.

Paul Martin from Tenors Unlimited, says "The inspiration for Carry You comes from Alex Smith, Harrison's dad, who completed an Ironman while carrying his son the whole way, hauling him in a catamaran behind him as he swam, pulling him in a trailer as he cycled, then pushing him in a racing chair as he ran. It took him 15 hours, 26 minutes and 29 seconds. Alex's triathlon was the subject of Discovery Channel's Award-winning documentary. All profits from sales of the song will go to Harrison's Fund."

Harrison's Fund was set up in 2011 up by Alex and Donna Smith, in response to their son Harrison being diagnosed with Duchenne, a type of muscular dystrophy. Its aim is to raise money to fund the world's best researchers, who are working to find a cure for the disease. Duchenne is a fatal neuromuscular condition caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin which results in progressive muscle weakness. One in 3,500 boys is born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the United Kingdom each year. Their average lifespan is just 20 years and it is 100% fatal. The three different options are Three Day Courses, Plays–in–a–Week and Rose Academy. The Three Day Courses are for those aged 7 – 12 and run three times during the summer holidays, Saturday 22 – Monday 24; Tuesday 25 – Thursday 27 and Friday 28 – Sunday 30 July, 10am – 4pm. The sessions are an introduction to performance for those with an interest in theatre and acting. This course allows aspiring actors to learn new skills, boost self–confidence and develop team–working skills.

Plays–in–a–Week are open to 10 – 19 year olds and run from w/c Monday 24 July to w/c Monday 28 August, Monday – Saturday. These intensive performance–based courses end with a full, costumed production with each cast working on a script and learning techniques with top–level directors, friendly assistants and stage management. This year's titles include: The Jungle Book, The Wind in the Willows, Gulliver's Travels, A Midsummer Night's Dream, 1984 and Macbeth.

Tenors Unlimited known as the "Rat Pack of Opera" performing at Epsom Playhouse on Thursday 4th May with local choir Show Choir. Two of the group – Paul Martin and Jem Sharples – are from Surrey.

Tenors Unlimited has performed alongside such notables as Sting, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Hayley Westenra, Simply Red and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few. So far in 2017 they have been performing at sell out shows in the USA and Bermuda before resuming their UK tour.
